I grew up in Fulham which had a real grassroots ordinary people vibe to it. Now it's a Nowhere town owned by corporations and Russian Oligarchs. The property has all been gentrified and is worth in excess of millions. The few remaining council blocks and flats are soon to be flogged off, redeveloped by private developers to be sold to absent foreign investors. I can't even afford a night out in Fulham anymore, let alone to live there
This song is a great premonition by the Kinks of the rot that started in the 1980's and is now firmly established and a warning that if you want an ethnic/diverse and a community that has a cohesive cross section of life then for heaven's sake keep the corporations out and protect it from gentrification.
