I can't believe no ones commented on this song, it's a real gem.
I see it as being about 2 young lovers starting out on the road of life together but struggling against the odds in order to survive, either because of impending unemployment, poverty, hardship or facing some sort of conflict and by staying together they can support each other.
Like my mother said about the virtues of marriage (If only I had paid heed) that if one ends up in the ditch, you at least have got someone to help pull you out.
