This song is absolutely beautiful, and instantly became one of my favorites when I first listened to it. I think it's about somebody dealing with an incredible sadness, perhaps the end of a very long relationship, and just wanting to be done with the sadness and be moved on already, but they can't, and this is what happens when somebody is currently in the middle of that level of depression. I think the song itself goes through the 5 stages of grief - the first verse is denial, the second (I am tired of punching in the wind...) is anger, then bargaining with "I am sorry for the trouble," depression with the humming part, and then finally acceptance, with the final chorus. Just my two cents.
