I love a lot of the Roches songs, and this is one of their most beautiful. But I hate its narrator. She's a stifling and controlling parent. Instead of just advising her daughter to stay in school, not follow the man she's fallen in love with, she tries to manipulate her into staying by cutting her off from the rest of her family.
"We'll always love you but that's not the point"?! If you truly loved her you'd find a way to let her make her own mistakes - which this might not even be - support her, and respect that fact that it's her life. Grr.
@chrisrazor - Interesting perspective. I’ve always thought this song was a discussion among the sisters about the future of the duo/trio, not a parent-child conversation.

@chrisrazor I don’t think this song is dealing with a parent-child relationship. It’s about close-knit siblings and one of them deciding to leave the family and run off to a different city/state be with a guy. It may actually be autobiographical, written by Maggie Roche about Terre Roche (I would need to fact check that but I seem to recall). If taken generally it’s about siblings growing up and breaking apart.
