The first verse could be interpreted to be about record collecting, even by Fucked Up's own admission, but it is actually about man's inventive nature or problem solving skills (science).
"Rubbing stones together" is how we made fire and got out of the dark ages- using our imagination. "Try to capture the name as it spins in your mind" could reference a spinning record, but more likely tries to describe the abstract idea of thought. It is a continuation of the Hidden World concept from their first album. An imagine in one's mind crossing through the hidden world into symbolic speech- giving something a name.
I will agree that record players were created using human thinking so it does make sense, but indirectly.
