I believe, Sam the singer, has written this song about a relationship that needs to end. From my perspective, it comes across as once, earlier, in the relationship both the singer and his girlfriend were in love and wanted the same thing. However, now things have changed, careers paths don't match up, life goals don't align and maybe his girlfriend has been sleeping around...

It seems, in this verse, his girlfriend has been seeing someone else and now it's time for her decide who she picks/want's to do with her life. As the singer knows what he want's and is doing with his life, but doesn't want to stuff around anymore, and move on.

These lyrics here indicate to me, that Sam is more in love with his partner, then she is with him. However, he realises it's a waste of time now, as the relationship is not progressing; but he's still heavily in love with her. The problem he is having, is that she has more control of the relationship then him.
