Ah, this song. I always listen to it after a break-up or when I'm missing a usually abusive ex.

It's clear this song is about a break-up, or loss of a connection with someone. As a previous commentor mentioned, it involves two people, who are wrong for each other, but somehow they are involved with one another. However, their time together hurts one another. They inflict pain into each other, particularly the songwriter. He knows he is the source of her pain.

"I didn't really lose you...I just lost it for a while"

Denial that it is over. Likely, it was a tumultuous relationship, causing the person who inflicted the pain or both parties perhaps to be unable to see the truth...that the relationship is over because they were so invested in it.

I must say, as a victim of abusive relationships...it's often difficult to let go of abusive partners despite the pain and daggers that they inflict over and over again in me. This song always rings a bell to me in terms of relationships like that.

Also, I highly recommend the electric version over the acoustic...it's way more haunting, and emotional.
