I had a tough time in high school in the late 90s and this song helped me a lot. I had no idea the meaning was literal. To me, this song captures the 2 sides of life. There's the hectic times when we find ourselves in tough situations and we panic, which is the verses of the song. Then there's the serene peaceful times that we can create if we just take a deep breath, relax, and realize that we can make it through (swim through) the situation, as the chorus perfectly captures.
