The meaning is left up to anyone's interpretation, I'm sure 10 different people will have 10 different ideas of the meaning. Personally I hear this and think he is talking about how with age one becomes somewhat jaded with life's experiences. We are always running, always searching for that next thing to re-inspire the hope and awe that we had in our younger years. But we ultimately know its a losing battle as we have all compromised the ideals of our youth in the reality of a harsh world. Nothing seems to fill the void so we settle for less than what we want.
