This is basically one big "leave me alone". Adam knows how he looks, or how everybody perceives him, "lonely", and he doesn't care. he's saying he likes being alone, or at least that's what he's telling the other person, but he's really saying he always comes back to misery. He treats it like its fine, but deep down he wants help.
