I used to think it was about a recently ended or failing relationship and wanting to get back together no matter how much others say you shouldn't. Now, a decade later and looking more closely at the lyrics after not listening to it for awhile, I think it is about being in love with someone while either you or her are in a relationship already and wanting to run off together. Maybe you already shared a kiss ("red poison of your lips") but don't want to talk about it/your feelings any further ("can't seem to open up"). You just want to burn bridges (with your/her significant other, or maybe she is a friend's significant other so you'd burn that bridge) and run off together. And seeing her with her SO, or seeing her while with yours makes you feel like you are drowning/dying in front of her. However, doing anything would be in the open for others to see and judge ("with a hundred thousand lights") so you need some tact in discussing your feelings or making any moves ("timing is everything").
My favorite song by them and always preferred the Seven Ways version.
