To add on to @Mellow_Harsher 's comment I also think it sort of saying that looks aren't everything. That is, with his partner he wants someone always there, when the other "temptations" think purely because they are "pretty" that he'll cheat (perhaps think they are "prettier").
By using the term cheerleader he is not only saying she is in his corner always (deep connection), but that to him she is beautiful (the epitome of a cheerleader) ... although others may feel she is not the prettiest.
