This song is based on a novel by Cormac McCarthy called The Road. The novel follows the journey of a man and his son through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, as they struggle to survive while travelling south on an interstate highway.

The song's title comes from the son's concerns with making sure they are "carrying the fire," assuring himself that he and his father are the good guys as opposed to the bad guys, who kill animals and people for food.

The general tone of the song mirrors the tone of the book, with hope for salvation seeming ever out of reach. While the book remains ambivalent right to the end as to whether hope become sight, the bridge of the song seems to answer in the affirmative.

The song ends as the book does, with the death of the father, leaving the son to continue carrying the fire.
