As per most TMOE songs, Kristian utilizes man's connection with nature to tell a double story.

In this instance, and on the surface, it's quite clear that the primary story is about a deep connection and contentious relationship between a man (boy) and his horse. The man struggles to contain and master the horse, but gradually accepts the horse's freedom and guidance in faith.

The secondary story, for which the primary is metaphor, seems to me to be about love and the fear of love / commitment, which rings strong in Kristian's other songs. The man (Kristian) resists and battles falling in love and being complacent with commitment out of fear. Gradually, as the man accepts the lover's freedom, the man gives into love, in the faith that they "will end up somehow, with a peaceful mind".
