I don't know to me this song is about some one seeing a life being lived bye others that they couldn't stand to live. To me they are seeing the lives and joy of others fading without so much as good by and realizing life will be no different for them if they don't get out. Even through all this they see even if they do get out there is no real hope of making it. So I guess you could relate it to a feeling of being hopelessly traped.
