I'm surprised no one has thought about this song yet. He speaks of not being able to save her soul. That is intense and terrifying to someone who probably trusted and loved him with her bare soul. She gave him permission to be with her and because of her failings, actions, couldn't do much more for her. It sounds like he loved her though.
