I love this song because it reminds us that all war is alike. This could be titled "WWI Correspondent" or "Vietnam Correspondent" or "Operation Iraqi Freedom Correspondent." It reminds me of The Red Badge of Courage.
The soldier is losing hope in the brutality that surrounds him, and after a while even word from home and loved ones isn't enough to buoy his spirits. After all, "words can't save lives."
I think by the end of the song it is clear that war has subsumed the soldier's spirit and/or mind. He cannot escape the gunfire any more than he can escape his own heartbeat.
