Here's a case where everyone is reading too much into the lyrics. I heard a radio interview with Johnny Nash years ago: turns out he wrote this song while lying in a hospital bed recovering from successful cataract surgery.
@scuba210 Sorry.... but this was written in the 60's after he'd made a trip to Jamaica. His first Gold Record Album was produced in UK with now World Famous Fabulous Five as Backup Band. Jimmy Cliff.... who would later cover this song had his first real hit in UK called "It's a Wonderful World". But it was his visit to Jamaica that cemented the title of this epic song. Which was written after his exposure to Real Rastafarian Religious Music that influenced this song and the album's production with Cliff Producing!

That's why.... since this is well before...
That's why.... since this is well before Bob Marley made Reggae/Ska really famous.... that we had Fabulous Five and Jimmy Cliff doing Ja.... Mon Rastafarian Reggae Jamaican Music became his new Religion!!! ....as to cataract surgery. Which only affects older people. I don't know about that. But Jonny Nash was typical American before his journey to Jamaica. Seeing the poverty he saw that was worse than he'd ever experienced, they say it changed him seeing and hearing these very poor people so happy with their God.... Ja and smokin da kind in worship of the all mighty.
"It's a Wonderful World" same type of song; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dckyG-fXSdw The message was Clear for Johnny Nash after that, after seeing these people in abject poverty so happy with their God and Jamaican Music!

This is after he'd first heard Jimmy's Record. Which made the British Top 40 with 'Wonderful World' in 1967 and recorded in 1969! https://books.google.com/books?id=felkD8CI97sC&pg=PA44&lpg=PA44&dq=Fabulous+Five+discovered+by+Jimmy+Cliff&source=bl&ots=gQd88BU2XT&sig=p6dKee3QvDWWX1Sp8E20bRjFiPM&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiE-uH_06vaAhVB3IMKHWOvC-wQ6AEIRjAE#v=onepage&q=Fabulous%20Five%20discovered%20by%20Jimmy%20Cliff&f=false
