This song is so bittersweet, and so full of compassion.
I always thought it was about a hobo-ish, slightly senile (or crazy - thinks he's God) old alcoholic that seem to often inhabit old pubs, spending his pension money on booze, but happily, contentedly, because though he may be a bit off from all the booze he is wise enough to know the importance of kindness, sweetness, and to cherish time, to ponder.
