ok so i analysed this song for class so i thought id put it up here (please excuse username i got frustrated...)
The song At Least I’m Not as Sad (As I Used to Be) by Fun, discusses moving on from a group of people one used to affiliate with. This is an interesting view point on the discussion of belonging as sometime you can belong and then outgrow the situation. This is clearly evident in the lyric ‘They said ‘"Hey Nate!" "Yeah, it's been awhile," "So are you gonna stay?" Ha! I began to smile, and I said: "You should have seen me, a couple of years ago, I was laughing, and drinking, and smoking, and singing." ’ The technique of extended dialogue, while unusual in a song, is helpful to create an authentic atmosphere. The persona seems to be looking back at his old days with nostalgia but is adamant he is happier now. This shows the inner turmoil that is created when someone is pushed to leave a toxic or unhealthy environment.
At heart this song is about growing up and leaving people that you don’t continue to share a sense of belonging with anymore. The persona clearly wants something more than going out and ‘laughing, and drinking, and smoking, and singing. ’ on the self-deprecating flip side the song ends with lots of small sentences about how his life is not sacred with the great pun ‘I'm not a prophet, but I'm here to profit’ added in for poetic effect
