I take away a lot more than "a song about hockey" or "a song about a kid who played hockey, but died before he could make it to the NHL".
To me, this is a song about mortality, and making the best of your time in this world. I lost two friends in one week earlier this year, and during that week, I was listening to this song on my way home from work. The last verse really resonated with me:
"Never can tell what might come down
Never can tell when you might check out
Just don't know, no you never can tell
So do right to others like you do to yourself"
You really don't know when you might "check out". Fate could deal you a bad hand, and you could be gone in an instant. Do your best to live your life in a way that you'd like to be remembered.
