I think the song is a lot more about the relationship between her parents, and how her mother finally realizes that her children were being abused by their father. Even though the verses focus more on her major depression, home life, and rape, the chorus really focuses on her father and how he was viewed by her mother.
The father loves abusing her mother and loves how she spits back at him. And even though the Father abuses the shit out of them, her Mother holds him up to these insanely high ideals only to see it all eventually come crashing down (hold me up to watch me die). The lines “You never saw it coming, you never knew what hit you” is faded in the background because he knows that his wife is going to be so shocked when she finds out, and he’s honestly amused and entertained by that, because it was all “invisible” to her.
But the big thing that really drives this song home for me is what Otep says here:
Behold, Feast your eyes as the peripherals explode.
Can you see me now?
Can you see me now?
The ugly will resign/When the young blood eats the light.
And one day/ this pain could save your life.
This is pivotal since it's showing how her mom eventually realizes the horrible things that her father was doing to them. The unimportant/pointless matters (the peripherals) disappear, the Father (the ugly) disappears and resigns from the picture after the truth about the children surface (when the young blood eats the light). And in a way, Otep feels like it's this twisted cycle because it was her mother finally recognizing her abuse and rape that got her out of the situation (one day this pain could save your life).
Even though she realizes that the abuse went on as her mother was preoccupied with her broken marriage, at the end of the song she makes sure not to blame her and actually reassures her, saying it was her who got them out of that horrible spiral of abuse.
All in all, even though it's pretty fucked up, it's a fucking awesome track since it perfectly illustrates the dynamics of a broken home...
