The song is about someone she met while she was on tour (on the East Coast) and how she was sad to be leaving ("The clock became a bullet hole, Cruel and unkind, It hurt me with its second hand"). "Hollow out my insides to place you in" sounds like she was in a lascivious mood (like one of her early, unreleased songs "Stick your finger in my buttercup"... she was pretty open about her sexuality). Interestingly enough, she recycled a line from "Absence of Fear" which appears on the Spirit album -- "Inside my heart, there's an empty room, it's waiting for lightning, it's waiting for you." Lightning being a reference to how rare a circumstance it is for lightning to strike... it's just as farfetched to expect him, etc.
