This seems like its about a love affair where one person has been keeping the other at arm's length, but are now finally giving into their possibly forbidden desire for them ("taken down I give in to what I cannot have").They somehow think that they can't be with the other person - that getting involved with them will only end in tragedy ("sweet despair feel you devour me") - but they're having a moment of weakness/finally are succumbing to their feelings for this person. It seems like they'd tried to be distant, hide their feelings ("taken down, I give in to what I can't disguise") and keep their heart closed off ("secret, hidden underneath it, trying hard to keep it safely out of reach"), but ultimately failed ("I surrender" & "I give in").
This reminds me of Varen & Isobel from the Nevermore series by Kelly Creagh. Both started out disliking each other because they were different; he's a goth (an outcast) and she's a cheerleader (popular girl). I think Varen even hated her or at least the crowd she hung out with, but then he eventually grew to care for Isobel as they got to know each other more. He tried to ignore what was growing between them, but he began to dream about her ("finally in my dreams") and - without wanting to - fell in love with her.
