I'm pretty sure this song is about a relationship that went wrong. The second verse are him talking about how much his partner means to him, and in what ways. However, the first verse (and chorus) are about an awkward drive home after a break up.
The last verse and ending lines really make this point for me though. Calling them at night, and continuing to think of them.
