The follow-up to "The Mess." This is a masterpiece in my opinion. The two of them have calmed down now....a little, and feeling a little more fragile. Her voice echoes in his mind recalling past arguments and situations... he's trying to explain his view on things, and she's tired of listening to his crap. The flow from the last song to this song is amazing.
This song is about (IMO) trying to express yourself and feeling uncertain/ or bad about it...like, kicking yourself...you're saying things about it all but not realizing you have a part in it too. "I wasn't supposed to feel ashamed" That's a guy just starting to realize he could be the jerk. He might not be to blame, but maybe could have done things differently.
