Cover art for Wires lyrics by Neighbourhood, The

I think the song is about two people. One tries to be successful, but not in a clean way. The other tells what happened, saying that he (the other guy) was good before the wires took over him. The wires could be a metaphor for something dirty or evil that was taking over the man who tried to be successful. It also shows how his good manners and talent vanished after he did what he did. Closer analysis goes something like:

We talked about making it I’m sorry that you never made it And it pains me just to hear you have to say it

His friend, acknowledging, that he made a mistake, by doing the wrong thing. At the end he had to admit that what he did was wrong, and his friend, the narrator, feels kinda bad about it.

You knew the game and played it, it kills to know that you have been defeated I see the wires pulling while you're breathing

The narrator, his friend, saying how he was conscious of what he was doing, that it was not okay, but did it anyways. His friend explains how he has changed and how the wires ( That represent something bad, evil, dirty, etc) had taken over him. - Also talks about the consequences of what his friend did. Something like "Look at how you were before, we were in the same road, look at us now, look at you now", Like how he was talented but then he cheated or made something wrong, at the point at he was "defeated" by the actions that he performed in them past and how those bad things he did took over him.

  • Also shows how disappointed and hurt his friend is (the narrator), as he is his friend, as they started the same way, as he knew what was going on and couldn't stop it. It is evidence in the "it kills to know" and " i see the wires pulling".

You knew you had a reason, It killed you like diseases, And I can hear it in your voice while you're speaking; you can't be treated.

This part has two different points to talk about. The first is the relation between "diseases" and the whole situation. Humans crave lots of things, including, of course, success, money, fame, etc. But when you crave a lots of it, you become obsessed and physically ill. Thats the situation of our guy. His friend, the narrator, notices it in his conduct, as he probably doesn't. This friend knows that this obsessions are killing him on the inside. That took over his body and mind and metaphorically "killed him". -Also when diseases have already taken over someone's body is very hard to treat them. It happens with physical diseases and mental diseases. His friend might have tried to help him, but maybe it was too late and the disease already took over him. he can see this in: "you can't be treated" -The second point is, the reason behind all the problem. When his friend says "You knew you had a reason", he tries to refer to the motivation and reason behind everything, but his tone suggests that he didn't agree with it. As he knew he had a straight reason about what was happening, he could look for another way to get it, to accomplish his goals and objectives, like in this case, to be successful. His friend (The narrator) knew it. And yet, he could be successful without having to get his hands dirty. - His friend (the narrator) knew everything,' i could see how screwed he was', he makes clear in: " i can hear it in your voice while you're speaking; you can't be treated". His friend clearly shows how bad he was, at the point, that he could not help him anymore. And also that he tried to help him and to make change, but the reason he had, was controlling his mind. The idea of being successful, which is the whole reason behind everything, took over his mind, and his friend couldn't help it, but to tell him how bad he was after what he did wrong, started showing and the consequences were obvious.

Mr. Know-it-all had his reign and his fall, At least that is what his brain is telling all

With Mr. Know-it-all, the narrator, speaks about his friend as a genius. As a talented person. That probably he was really smart and applicated before he did the wrong thing. Also Mr. Know-it-all is a kinda satirical and sarcastic way to call his friend as he knew everything but the fact that what he was doing was wrong. -Now, the second sentence is a really powerful sentence, and maybe, the most powerful sentence in the song. Saying how he pretended to be a really smart and applicated person, no matter if he really was, because at the end, he was corrupt and false. His brain tricked him, his friends, and lots of people, people who were enchanted with his character, with his intelligence, but not knowing that we was a bad, corrupt man. -The narrator uses the correct words to explain everything as if he knew all, but couldn't help it.

Time for the chorus. If he said "Help me kill the president" I’d say he needs medicine, Sick of screaming, let us in Wires got the best of him All that he invested in, goes Straight to hell Straight to hell

The lyrics are the part of the song where we can find much more information that in the other parts. The chorus is key part for the understanding of the song. "If he said 'Help me kill the president' i'd say he needs medicine" In this part the narrator wants to tell us a couple of things. the first one is that his friend was expecting such thing to come out of his mouth. Help me kill the president. It shows a lot about his personality. It tell us that he was capable of doing such thing and suggesting it. It shows how mad he was. It shows how the idea of being successful completely destroyed his whole self and his friends too. It shows what he was capable of killing someone for his own good. His friend's response (the narrator) , shows his own personality. How wouldn't do such thing, How bad and mad was it. But mainly it shows that the narrator was always there to help him. To tell him how bad he was. The part "needs medicine" helps us understand that his friend was literally telling him "you're crazy, you're bad" and secretly telling him "stop it for your own health".

"Sick of screaming, let us in"

Here he see how desperate he was for fame, success. The whole reason behind all the problem is that he was thirsty for success. that he was literally going crazy for it. But then he is getting tired of trying. trying to get in, to become it, everything he dreamed about. The "let us in" sounds particularly special to me. Like is is begging for it because the whole success thing has become a part of him or at least the idea of being successful.

"Wires got the best of him All that he invested in, goes Straight to hell Straight to hell"

This part is more like, 'oh oh too late'. as the narrator is his friend, clearly makes us see how screwed his friend was. The narrator explains that the wires (which, as i said before, represent devil, bad, corrupt, etc) took all of him, all of what his friend was proud of, his talent, his kindness, his personality, his intelligence, and he was left with nothing. Not his friend. Not his "fans" ,nothing. All his effort, all his work, and all his talent disappeared and as the lyrics say "went straight to hell".-Knowing that hell is bad place where the sinners go, but the fact that we was still there, is like a consequence, because he had to face the situation and pay for what he did, that could be actually going to jail, or just people judging and harassing him or his own thoughts consuming his mind and driving him crazy up to the point where we could kill himself. He was screwed mainly because he lost all the special and good things about himself. He WAS talented.

Now, everything changes form here. The narrator starts feeling kinda bad and sorry for him. Tries to explain, what was going through his mind.

He told me I should take it in Listen to every word he’s speaking

The narrator a this point, struggles in the position of friend. He always helped him and it goes down from here. His friend is like 'do i believe him?'. He asked him to believe and to trust. And as a friend, the narrator knows that he can't let him down, but also knows that he did the wrong thing. So the narrator tries to believe in that old friend he had. Tries to remember the talented friend he knew.

The wires getting older I can hear the way their creaking As their holding him Well I could see it in his jaw That all he ever wanted was a job

The bad and the evil inside of him was still there. time has passed, and he's still the same, But this bad things inside of him are still affecting him. are still making him bad, someone you cannot trust. a corrupt person. He is barely living with those wires controlling him. He is barely the same. For the narrator (his friend) He is barely the person he was before but still has something he had before. There was hope. The narrator sees the possibility of getting him back, and tries to explain to himself what the hell was going on. He sees a tiny little bit of innocence in his eyes. He hears a tiny little bit of innocence in his voice. At the end the whole reason behind the problem was being successful, and the narrator tries to explain that to himself. "all he ever wanted was a job".

He tells me to be raw Admits to every little flaw That never let him sit upon the top

Won’t tell me to stop Thinks that I should be a little cautious Well I can tell the wires pulled

The narrator still sees the good in him. His talent. The things he said to his friend, were the things that convinced the narrator that his friend was a victim. But the narrator went to the past. He was remembering his old self. When he was good. His friend was remembering his friend- who used to be the perfect leader . Who was conscious of his flaws but also conscious of the good things that made him who he was. The narrator returns to the present. His friend is screwed. And his selfishness stopped him from changing to good. The narrator realises that he is a monster and that there is nothing to do about it. "well i can tell the wires pulled": Who he is now is a monster, there isn't a single doubt about it. He is done.

Chorus again

I'm having trouble in believing And I just started seeing Light at the beginning of the tunnel but he tells me that I'm dreaming When he talks I hear his ghosts every word they say to me I just pray the wires aren't coming

-PLOT TWIST- The narrator goes crazy for him. His friends problems affected him (The narrator). The narrator struggles because he feels like it is his fault, maybe he didn't help him enough or maybe he feels like a complice for trusting him, listening to him, and continuing to be his friend. He thinks the wires are coming for him. Afterall, the two people i talked about could be just on person- along with its thoughts. Or the alternative end could be, he dies, he goes crazy for his friend's problems, or his own problems. The light at the tunnel, the ghosts chasing him .

*"The Wires" as metaphor. Wires in this song relates to the bad the evil. The bad things that pulled him and manipulated him like a puppet. Wires that trapped and tied him. There are many ways to see the wires and this element is the most important element in the song.

*Yes this song is about someone who's politically incorrect. Yes is about a corrupt politician. Yes is about a corrupt leader. This song fits perfectly for corrupt leaders, as we can evidence in different parts of the song, when the narrator portraits his friend as someone smart who "speaks" to people.

*Diseases are natural and you can not stop them. You can easily frame our character into one. Maybe he couldn't stop it, he should have been treated as he couldn't.

@lulilinda It was fun reading this because you seem pretty enthusiastic about this interpretation

That actually makes sense
