John was not an atheist but not a Christian either. He says in his autobiography that he was spiritual rather than religious that he didn't follow any one religion, although he had great respect and even longing for those that did.He also said the closest to the way he felt was the North American Indian belief in the Great Spirit .Being born in his 27th years refers to his dicovery of the beauty of the Rockies where he lived for the rest of his life. When he says you can talk to God I believe he is speaking of discovering God in nature.

The line 'He lost a friend and kept his memory is also explained in his autobiography as being about an actual incident when a friend was killed in a moterbike accident in Colorado.

I've always been a bit puzzled by the line And they say that he got crazy once and tried to touch the sun. I think that bit might be drug related even if the song in general isn't or it could be a reference to Icarus who flew too close to the sun and burnt his wings. Other songs of John's refer to Greek legends. If I am right about that reference it is ironic now when you consider how he died.

@forestchild23 Wow, that is very ironic about Icarus and John's death in an airplane if that is what the verse refers to. His songs really go to my soul and often give me goosebumps and feelings of such emotional well-being and love of nature as well as touching so accurately on feelings in relationships. Wonderful singer/musician!
