I get the interpretation that it is a song about life and death. a female guardian spirit has died and her death has bought in a new race of "crawlers" and we are affected by it today. being poisoned with death.

or about humans abandoning spirituality for humanity.

"Sea water’s flowing from the Middle of my thighs Wild buffalo are dancing on Cliff tops in the skies"

water representing new life and youth. being a woman she is fertile. skies representing her head/ mind wild buffalo representing the abundance of her hair flowing freely in the wind. she uses earthy symbols to represent and define her nature.

"Adorn me in feathers from Dead birds And contemplate the size Of leather pelts to wind me in, put Shudders on my eyes"

this where the song now turns into something macabre.. she understands that she has died. There is a death ceremony happening and her corpse is being adorned in feathers as a tradition and leather pelts are used to bind the corpse for burial. she finds this appalling and fearsome therefore she shudders her eyes from it. She is a spirit observing the ceremony and doesn't like the idea that she has died. her death welcomed the "crawlers"

"write it down the names and dates of the daughters who bore out of me like grandmother's vines"

she asks to remember the daughters who was born pure from her, the land. the spirit of earth. almost like a plea to find them to continue her race and to save life from death. to further her lineage like grandmother did before her.

"they hang from the planks of my cedar grave grow pretty long lashes and beards guarding the rain of me from them heedless trampling toes gathering honeybees in their sockets and creases and holes"

the crawlers hang from tree branches of her own burial place which is a forest of cedar trees. the crawlers have both female and male aspects, lashes represent the beauty of a woman and the beard represent the strength of a man. they stop her from being released from her grave by damaging and stealing the life her creation. she cant do anything about it because she has been confined by death. the dead are crushing the flowers (beauty of the land) and devouring its workers (honey bees in the sockets, creases and holes) ( death overruns the beauty of land)

"they'll cover the hills with their sweet flesh and soft nails"

she sees that crawlers are beautiful but deadly. she sees that they will overrun the land with their existence. nails symbolizing their permanence by imposing their power over the land.

"they'll cover the doors with the screams that their minds dispose"

in their wake they are killing all that is still alive, ignoring the cries of the sufferers.

"they'll weave their long souls into the frame to grow their foliage in sew their long hairs into their beds"

death is a long soul. it has no end no beginning. the corpse weave their long souls around the very frame of life. therefore life is now poisoned with death. death blooms the foliage of curses in life such as sickness, ill fates, misfortune, etc. the corpses sew their very being into the most intricate parts of life. a strand over hair is thin so it could fit into the most tightest of patterns. in reality, that's why you can always expect misfortune along with fortune. death is in everything and everywhere now.
