What is so painful to wake up to? Why does there seem to be no substance? The only real clue is in the last line:

Whomever belongs to the face, I can't help but wonder if it speaks to those times when you are looking back at a recently lost love - you know there were very good reasons for what was lost, but the face that comes together in your mind is only of the good aspects, and we torture ourselves in this way.
