I personally thought this song was about The (wolf's) struggle to not hurt the person (The rabbit) you love even though it is inevitable in certain classes of society (or food chain in this case).
They want to love, but it will end up hurting everyone in the end; So they distance themselves and watch from afar, taunting an imaginary thought of what could be.
