Now this is just a guess, but I think that this song could be about slavery. I was following a pack all swallowed in there coats = I was running for my life and everyone was bundled cause it was winter.

With scarves of red tied 'round their throats to keep their little heads from falling in the snow = some people may have scarfs or ropes with blood that the slave owners tug on to keep them moving.

And I turned 'round and there you go and Michael, you would fall and turn the white snow red as strawberries in the summertime = Someone saw someone fall maybe that they knew called Micheal cause the slave owner caught up with them and shot Micheal.

That's just what I think this song means!

@1009778330 Interesting thoughts, i was thinking it was referencing Michael the archangel who led gods armies in a battle against satin. I think I will have to look up the origin of this song and see if i can really figure it out.
