I think this song is about a childhood/early adulthood friend. The friend & mat might have been misguided youths at some point with no direction. Sounds like they lived together for a while trying to find themselves until one of them grew out of it or left.
Years later he either gets a call from him or about him. He still wonders about his friend when he is driving alone at night & prays for him that one day he'll figure himself out.
They clearly aren't in touch anymore but Mat still keeps him in his prayers.
