This song seems to be about passing life on to a next generation with great doubt for what the next generation will achieve. There are very strong hints (in my head) that the first generation refuses to help as much as they should "I cant serve anymore".

All the first generation did to prepare the next, was fill them up with fear of whats to come. They away any potential momentum "feet on the floor" the next generation would have with that fear.

My Interpretation

and it's not just referring to one parent and child. I think Mike is referring to what he imagines majority of parents are doing to prepare their children. I think this makes more sense then it being about God. If it were referring to one child and one parent, I dont think "one day all this could be yours" really makes much sense

More proof that my interpretation lends itself to talking about generations and not individuals is that Massive Bereavement also speaks about an entire generation and not just one person figuratively.
