Obviously about a relationship, whether that be with a significant other, a friend, family member, etc...
This split, or break in communication does not seem to be mutual. From a first person perspective our lyricist seems to be in a rut, or slump, particularly with alcohol while the other person in question, seems to be doing great things. Although this is quiet obvious, it worth mentioning.
We have two almost contrasting pre-choruses:
"and I’ll be sad when the leaves fall
and I’ll be sad when they grow back
I think of you when the leaves change
and I remember what it is I lack"
and
"I may be sad when the leaves fall
I may be sad when they grow back
will you think of me when the leaves change
will you remember what it is you lack"
Initially our narrator, WILL be sad as leaves fall (time passes), then morphs into "MAYBE" sad as time passes. Showing potential healing? Obviously "I think of you..." and "will you think of me..." are more-or-less the same, but changing perspective of who is thinking of who.
The chorus seems like a pretty direct message of "Don't leave me, stay with me"
Vague information, but that makes it such a good song as many people go through this at least once in there life, making it a relate-able and overall good song!
