A few things i learned in college about our species; here's my disertation:

A. The earth is full of minerals, natural resources etc... & we, man, are sucking it dry..killing it.. we are a society of consumption. Users.
B. heavenly bodies make us fight: we generally fight for 2 things 1. land 2. religious freedom. Hence most all wars have been over power so we can have/control land & religion.
So maybe perhaps the song is about speaking out against the senseless irresponsible waste/consumption of those resources & disagreeing over the religious wars to gain power and criticizes humanity.. then immediately he says - oh no I'm just kidding - "I'm only joking, don't believe a word I've said"
Basically - I'm just messing w u. I'm crazy. Im smoking im high. I didn't say anything...I'm just messing around.. to avoid argument, confrontation or worse treason. Just my take.
But, I will say this. There are people who do actually believe that everything is alive, including the planets and stars. Some kind of different consciousness that is on whole other level. They would say that humans are parasites for the very reason you just gave. Basically, killing the life in Earth and it's chance to ever evolve into a star.
