In my opinion, this song is about these people's friends dying by suicide/drugs.

Maybe they were close friends, and the guy who lost his friend now feels hopeless and lonely, like he has no one.

It seems as though the girls friend was a heroin addict.
As a result of the deaths, both people are feeling suicidal.

Now that their friends have died, they are now suicidal and their method of suicide is shooting themselves. By saying their side, I believe they're referring to the side of their heads. The enemy across the line is the suicide, yes that sounds weird. But I think its the suicide because they went across the line by taking their own lives.
