Blake and John have talked about the long leadup to their relationship- how it developed from a professional one into something incredibly personal. It ended (at first) ironically when they both moved to the same area.
I'm guessing these lyrics reflect the questioning they each did- wondering why they were so drawn together but when they were together they felt compelled to wander off and create distance between one another.
Of course, they're together now (2014) and hopefully that will continue.... which is where the lyrics lead I believe.
