Leonard Cohen is writing and singing about the quest to find pure consciousness or the spirit of God/Life which can only be found by moving the stone of ego (dualism, the particle, the wave) out of the way. A movement of veiling conditions that can only happen when one becomes a slave to oneness, spirit, the Tao, love, life, etc. Mr. Cohen referred to being a slave to God in an earlier song, "If It Be Your Will."

But whatever 'occurred' in that monastery for him, seem to seal his happiness and he no longer was a 'seeker' anymore, he says...
