I like how a lot of Deerhunter songs look at childhood and the past as this hopeful, imaginative state... and that drugs are just an adolescent way of trying to recapture that energy but tend to end in unintended results.
It's kind of a "Puff the Magic Dragon" thing, though a much nicer execution. The wonder and willingness to dream could be a young boy looking to the Captain, or any of us looking to drugs and other vices, begging for some kind of adventure or elevation.
Maybe a little shout out to Billy Joel for using the word "Captain" in this way once too.
