This song is pretty enigmatic, but at the same time the message, or one of the messages of the song is perfectly clear. That message would be that of perseverance, passion, or maybe a few other things.
"That love is for the fighter born to lose but never quit Swinging for the moon in the water" Obviously both examples illustrated in the song show that either by means of being distracted or by true intention, each person referenced is so awestruck by the reflection of the moon in the water that they for a minute or second failed to realize that they are heading the completely wrong direction for something that cannot be obtained.
Among the more deep meanings hidden in the song, or the meanings in which one may find more than one, these lyrics stand out the most, and seem to be telling a slightly different message: "When I said, "This must be what love is like I saw it in a dream" You looked into my eyes and said, "You don't know what you mean" "When she says, "If I've had love in my life then surely this is it" I said, "Anyone who talks like that doesn't understand one bit" This dialogue between the two figures is probably such that can be interpreted in many different ways. Perhaps it is these lyrics that are meant to stir memories of past experiences in the listener; experiences that presumably are different but have relation to the moon in the water.
