This is one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Ever.
The man buys a postcard to send to his wife when he lands at his destination (Let's say Mexico). His plane crashes, he's killed and the postcard makes its way to the wife. And like another poster said, the destination (which is never mentioned) changes from Mexico to heaven in her eyes. This is gives her a little comfort because he not only did he get to tell her that he loved her once more, she knows that he's okaye.
