My thoughts are similar to the other comment, but different in that I think the other comment is being too specific. The writer brings no indication that there may be any kind of child involved here lyrics-wise, and seeing that the tone of the actual song itself consists of long, heavy, almost dreary rifts...The last thing that comes to mind is a child. Children signal innocence, which honestly isn't a common theme associated with progressive rock or metal.
Much more likely this song has to do with simply the angst of breaking up with a significant other but still nonetheless regretting it. How do I know? Well, most of us have been in that kind of situation, haven't we? We know for a fact that rationally we made the right choice but still go through different scenarios in our mind which could have made things right and perfect. (Thus this song.) Reasons people provide as excuses for breaking up are hardly ever things that couldn't have been rectified, and we focus on what we could have done rather than accept some things are outside our control...It drives us literally out of our minds.
Well, certainly explains the song's psychedelic nature doesn't it...
