To me its a story of how most of humanity is lost and trying to find lifes greatest mysteries. Using drugs (work, money, as well) are distractions but also tools that we THINK we use to get us closer to God. To make us whole with him again.
Instead of listening to our spiritual selves, we get caught up in spiritual texts (old testament, torah, koran, bible).
Also how the crooks (that know the truth and prevent humanity from reaching their goal) sell us plastic (credit card, money) to keep us pre-occupied.
