To me, this song is about a relationship still its opening stages. Maybe it's past the vague "hello's," but not quite to the depth that a romance can blossom in to.

The two are setting out into the "city they don't know yet," the unknown avenues that the relationship may lead them down, "cross the bridges not yet burned," again, still in the early stages. Both are too polite to have gotten into the conflicts that all relationships inevitably face. And because they haven't really gotten to the depths of each others emotions they are stuck where "the ice won't let us further."

Song Meaning

@Sevey13 so glad I looked up these lyrics. I've listened to this band for years and recently saw them live. I've always had this song shuffle through and never paid much attention to the lyrics -- when I heard the grandfather/ grandmother part, I always just immediately took it as a nostalgic song. Beautiful beautiful lyrics though encapsulating a time we'd all want to freeze, initially have, or get back to. romances in the winter > summer love. great interpretation above.
