John Einarson wrote on Hot Burritos: The True Story of The Flying Burrito Brothers: “The Christine in the song was Christine Hinton. It was written about her. When Gram and I were having our individual marital problems, Christine Hinton was right in there stirring it all up. So we got her in a song. She was Crosby's girlfriend at the time. It was a very incestuous social scene back then. We were mad at her, which is why the lyrics came out like that. When the poor girl was killed we changed it to 'Devil In Disguise,' but of course that was after the album had come out. I don't like those lyrics much now. They're just too misogynous."
