the lyrics are insanely powerful. but my opinion the Music video is what brings it into my attention. it starts with a young man cleaning stairs. him cleaning the stairs, and zooming on his hand which has a scar on it, is symbol later in the videos meaning.
it switches to him walking through a run down house or his home, and his father who is holding a cigarette seems sick. he takes the cig and puffs it, then puts it out. this is symbolic showing the influence on his son. he (the father) is killing his body, while watching his son, literally do the same.
the son goes to his room, and is very upset of this. and marks an X on the wall. showing over the video, he marks more and more X's on his walls. symbolising the amount of times he is copying his father yet knowing he is wrong and he needs to stop.
it goes back to him cleaning the stairs. as in showing repetition with him trying to "clean" the stair or literally "clean" his fathers problems and/or addiction.
next, a womanly figure walks down the stairs with a suitcase. as if moving out. the face is scribbled out with video FX. this shows how the boy feels to "forget" or "cancel the thought of her leaving. it could be the mother probably. maybe the sister. both would be important.
next, it shows the boy, absolutely pissed and showing it. while fast forwarding fast to show more repetition
now, the father "wakes up" literally. and starts looking for his son, he is no where to be found.. so he goes to the outside door, and two paramedics go through the door. he is stricken and worried something happened to his son. but then, he sees his song come up to him with the same worried look. they look at eachother, then look inside to the paramedics, the paramedics are actually tending to the father whos still lying in the chair feeling dead.. but now, it shows he is literally dead, when they put a stethoscope to his heart. the boy and father look at each other, and raise their hands.. and they both have the same scar that we seen on the boy the entire time..
i feel, this song shows how perhaps jeremy, had troubles with his father. and the big thing that wraps it up is the scar on BOTH of them at the end. it almost shows how it happens generation to generation. or it even could show how the scar is for both of them because they need to help eachother.
i feel it is showing the emotion of wanting to help his family so much and his father but it never would happen. like the line "I get it, no, I get it
Can't help those who don't wanna be helped" as in his father would not "want" to be helped. and it made things all crumble. and as he wished or maybe if it did work out that everything will get better with the ending of them both having the scar, as if to prove a point on just how important it is to help, want to be helped, and working things out... BEFORE its too late... i love this song..
