I'm thinking some of the lyrics here are wrong, like 'perch' should be 'crutch' a few other things too...I think the song is one of desperation, finding a new way, there's some casualties...the northeast bus comes back, he doesn't mind when the pioneers go soft on him, i.e. there were failed attempts at breaking away, coming of age and finding a place, he/they had to come back, he can't blame them though...it's all a bit vague but I get an overall feeling of desperation, trying to change, trying to discover something new - not sure if 'new...
