I think he is referencing a child's game of ball tag (cross between dodge ball and tag). If you play it with a smaller ball often times you can't see who has the ball as easily as you could with the larger balls of dodge ball. You could think about that game as being a correlation to life. You are continually scrambling to stay afloat watching out for potential dangers / pit falls, this being the person with the ball. When playing ball tag you have to keep trying to keep track of who has the ball and asking others who has it as kids start screaming and shouting as they get chased. In life you never know who is after you to derail you, purposeful or not.
So the whole song could be a metaphoric correlation between a kid’s game and life. In those types of kid’s games there is rarely any rules or a guide on how to play, you just jump right in and you figure it out as you go with the situation continually changing.
Could Queenie Eye be a childhood friend?
It’s such a beautiful and fun song, heard Paul sing it in Chicago this year a few months ago. Was awesome, he sung it with such a passion.
