The song's simplicity lends itself to a vast possibility of meanings, but I'd like to use it to describe a situation we might all find ourselves in. There's somebody that you have strong feelings for, and the days go by until one night there's a social gathering that you know she/he will be at. You have it all planned out in your head, the things you'll say, the timing of your words once and for all. But then you find yourself too nervous or too hesitant to make a move, and the night ends, unfulfilled.
